Road to Hana
Pack up the rental car and go on a sightseeing excursion on land. While the Road to Hana is “only” 64 miles, it’s full of hairpin turns, one-lane bridges, and an array of blind spots. You may start out thinking a 25-mile-an-hour speed limit is slow, but you’ll be thankful for it as the road twists and turns. The road to Hana isn’t just about driving. There are scenic hikes to beautiful waterfalls, lava tubes and rocks, black sand beaches, and historic sites like Charles Lindbergh’s grave. You can brave the road on your own and plan your own stops, or you can join a tour with a knowledgeable guide who will take you to many of the best landmarks and hiking spots so you don’t miss a thing. However you navigate the path, make sure to pack plenty of drinks, snacks, and your camera.

Take a short drive or walk from your vacation rental and you’ll find a restaurant or shop with authentic Hawaiian food. It’s a special place full of both ancient and modern Hawaiian culture. The park also cares for several endangered species, some of which exist only in Maui and nowhere else in the world. See stark volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rain forest and more on a hike through the park’s backcountry.
Lahaina Banyan Court Park
The banyan tree is the oldest banyan tree in the U.S. To see it, head to Lahaina Banyan Court Park in Lahaina. The now giant tree was planted April 24, 1873 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first European missionaries. At the time the tree was only a single eight-foot-tall tree. Today, the 150-year-old tree stands over 60 feet tall, with a crown spread of more than 225 feet across 16 main trunks to cover nearly two acres of land.
Despite the wildfires of 2023 burning much of the area around the famed tree, the tree’s roots have held on, and it continues to stand for all to see. Local arborists have checked the tree and its roots and have found signs of a healthy tree beneath the charred outer layers.
