December through April is “Whale Season” where Humpback whales (Kohola) travel 4,000 miles from Alaska for mating and calving while they escape the harsh winter months. Humpback whales measure 40-50 feet in length and weigh 25-40 tons. They eat nothing in the warm waters of Maui. Their diet consists mainly of krill which they consume approximately 1 ½ tons of per day during their time in Alaska. If you are lucky enough to visit Maui during Whale Season you are in for a treat! It is an awesome sight to see a 40 ton whale do a full breach out of the water. During these months you will most likely see this from the beach or even from your ocean side dining table. We strongly recommend booking a whale watching excursion if you are on island during “Whale Season”.
