Whale Watching

December through April is “Whale Season” where Humpback whales (Kohola) travel 4,000 miles from Alaska for mating and calving while they escape the harsh winter months. Humpback whales measure 40-50 feet in length and weigh 25-40 tons. They eat nothing in the warm waters of Maui. Their diet consists mainly of krill which they consume approximately 1 ½ tons of per day during their time in Alaska. If you are lucky enough to visit Maui during Whale Season you are in for a treat! It is an awesome sight to see a 40 ton whale do a full breach out of the water. During these months you will most likely see this from the beach or even from your ocean side dining table. We strongly recommend booking a whale watching excursion if you are on island during “Whale Season”.

Trilogy Excursions

Trilogy is a family business committed to excellence by creating lifelong memories through personalized service delivered with Aloha. Trilogy has over 45 years of experience and is Maui’s first sailboat company! There are several different excursions with Trilogy to choose from but with each you can expect incredible Aloha service, gorgeous island and wildlife viewing and valuable memories to be made. One of our personal favorites is the “Discover Lanai” excursion where you’re bound to see whales during the winter months.

Pacific Whale Foundation

In business for more than 30 years, Pacific Whale Foundation is an eco-friendly company whose charters are led by knowledgeable Certified Marine Naturalists. Most of their profits go toward whale research and preservation. During the 2-hour cruise you will see humpback whales and if you are close enough, you will hear live whale songs piped over the PA system from a hydrophone lowered into the water. Cruises can be booked out of the Lahaina (main office) or Ma’alaea Harbor.
