If you’re looking for a break that includes sun, warmth, and plenty of fun, you’ll want to make sure you consider Maui for your next vacation. While you consider all the fun and exciting adventures Maui has to offer you, take the time to consider how you plan to experience Maui, and what kind of impact you’ll make while you are here. We’d love to host you, and help you experience Maui like a local.

Accommodations

Choosing a vacation rental provided by My Perfect Stays is the perfect first step to supporting local businesses and vacationing responsibly. Our collection of homes are all private residences, most owned by Maui residents. We employ local tradespeople and vendors to do everything from housekeeping to major and minor repairs that make the home livable during your stay. We’re a local company that employs locals at our office, so you can be sure that just by choosing us you’re choosing to leave a lasting economic impression on Maui.

Shopping

Resist the urge to go to large shopping centers and shop at the name-brand national chains. Instead, seek out local shops and boutiques. Not only are these owned and operated by local residents, many carry Made in Maui or Made in Hawaii items that benefit local and state communities. Locals offer everything from food to fashion and souvenirs. Handmade jewelry, crafts, and more can be found and are often one-of-a-kind and last longer than manufactured goods that you can easily find at home.

Dining

Another urge you may need to resist is the urge to eat at chain restaurants. While the location is often owned by a local family, a good portion of the profits still goes to the national chain. Seek out “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants and ask for suggestions about the best local eateries. We’ll help point you to local dining establishments that offer everything from fresh seafood in a casual atmosphere to a more upscale place for a special date.

Go Sightseeing

You came to Maui to see the sights. Travel the Road to Hana, or hike back to a waterfall, and check some boxes on your bucket list. Respect the places you visit. The saying “Take only pictures, leave only footprints” is a good rule to live by. You came to see and experience the place, not take from it. If you happen to visit any of the ancient cultural or religious sites, be mindful not to disturb the environment. Some tourists like to get a little too close, go off of marked pathways, or worse leave behind litter.

Cultural Immersion

The Hawaiian Islands are a blend of Hawaiian, Polynesian, and other cultures, and you can experience each on your visit. Attend a lūʻau or visit the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The next step is to visit with the locals and learn aspects of the culture the guidebooks and museums don’t always tell you.

Our vacation rentals are found in Maui’s neighborhoods and communities. A great way for some cultural immersion is to step outside and meet your neighbors. Just talking to employees at the next activity or attraction won’t get you the same experience as connecting with a local resident on a more casual and personal level.

Tours

While part of sightseeing, taking a tour of the area that’s led by a local is a great way to vacation responsibly. You’ll not only see and do many of the activities you read about online or in guidebooks, but you’ll get a local’s take on history, the ecosystem, and more. Tours include snorkeling, SCUBA, kayaking or canoeing, wildlife watching, and many other activities. Local captains and tour guides will take you to the lesser-known areas for a unique experience away from other tourists just hitting the ‘hot spots.’

Talk About Your Experiences

Traveling responsibly means leaving a mark on the place you visit without leaving a physical mark. Many of the places you go and things you do may not have a large internet presence. Some have a basic, informational website while others may not have one at all. They rely on word of mouth.

Talk to your loved ones about your favorite places and encourage them to experience it as well on their next vacation. Make a social media post with pictures or video and talk about all the fun you had.
