Surf Conditions

Not every beach is surfable, but there are a number of beaches for beginners and experts alike. Winter (November-April) conditions include prevailing swells of N/W and winds of SW/SSW. Air temperatures reach ranges from the 70s to mid-80s, and water temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Summer conditions (May-October) see prevailing swells from the south and winds from the northeast. Air temperatures range from 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while water temperatures land anywhere 72-82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Beginner & Intermediate Surf Spots

Kahului Harbor

Beginners can build confidence in the enclosed harbor, where the water isn’t as rough as the Pacific Ocean. There’s a particular swell in the middle of the Harbor that’s fairly predictable, with the wave getting fairly large at times. It’s a great place to learn balance and sharpen your skills before hitting the beaches lining the ocean. It’s close to Kahului airport, and there’s ample parking nearby to unload your gear.

Puamana Beach Park

For surfers who arrived on the island via the Kapalua airport, it’s a great place to start. Like the harbor, the water is a lot calmer than the harsh waves of the Pacific found in other parts of the island. Build your confidence while watching out for coral reefs and sea urchins in shallower waters.

The waters are a great place to practice basics like paddling, standing up on the board, and catching smaller waves that don’t hurl you toward shore. While the beach can get busy during peak times, there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the sand and surf.

S-Turns & Pohaku Park

As you build confidence, you’ll want to start challenging yourself. This area offers larger waves while still offering a little protection from the massive swells of the Pacific. The area attracts surfers of every skill level, so you might find some companionship and guidance from those looking to escape the larger swells. It’s a popular place, and for more than just surfing, so be prepared to share in the fun.

Experienced Surfer Spots

For those who have been surfing a long time, they may have been to Maui countless times, or it could be a bucket list “check mark.” No matter if it’s your first time surfing the waves of Maui or you’re a seasoned veteran, you can challenge yourself with these swells.

Ho’okipa Beach

Another gem for those who arrived on the island via Kapalua airport, it offers a bit of a challenge. The area is known for its larger swells and is a great fit for surfers chasing the perfect wave. Not only will you find surfers, but there’s a large crowd of experienced windsurfers who prefer the area, too. It’s almost always “peak” season here, so you’ll want to get here early to make sure you can find a parking spot.

Honolua Bay

Surfing world champions have often called the swell “the best wave in the world.” It’s a powerful swell that keeps surfers moving for a large distance and is even easy to predict. The area gets very busy during the summer, so be prepared to arrive early. When the waves aren’t the main attraction, you can grab some snorkeling gear and explore below the water.

Lessons

If you’re new to the sport or just want to improve your skills, Maui is the perfect place to start your surfing journey. Because of its vast surfing culture, Maui has a number of surf schools offering lessons and camps. Go from land classes to getting familiar with the board, to catching some of the waves listed here.

Surf Gear

Whether you’re a seasoned pro who couldn’t bring all their gear on vacation, or a new enthusiast starting out, Maui has what you need for the perfect surfing experience. There are a number of stores that rent and sell gear like boards, wetsuits, swimsuit, beach gear, and more.
